Whack-a-Mole Tips: How to Get the Highest Score

Whack-a-Mole looks like pure reflex, but the players with the highest scores are actually doing a small amount of pattern-reading between taps — not just hitting everything that moves.

1. Scan before you tap, don't tap on reflex

With only 30 seconds on the clock, it's tempting to smash every mole the instant it appears. But a split-second glance at color before you tap is what separates a high score from a mediocre one — it costs almost no time and saves you from the mistake below.

2. Never tap the bomb mole

The bomb mole costs you 5 points if you whack it — more than double what a normal mole earns you. On a busy board with several moles up at once, resist the urge to clear everything; skipping the bomb mole is worth more than the fractions of a second you'd save by hitting it anyway.

3. Prioritize golden moles when they appear

Golden moles are worth 3 points instead of 1, but they don't stay up any longer than a normal mole. The best approach is to keep your eyes moving across the whole board rather than staring at one spot, so you catch a golden mole's short window the moment it appears.

4. Keep your hand near the center of the board

Since moles pop up randomly across the grid, resting your finger or cursor near the middle rather than a corner cuts down your average travel distance to any given hole — a small habit that adds up over a fast 30-second round.

Where your eyes should be

Many players stare at the last hole they tapped. Instead, rest your eyes on the middle of the board and use the edge of your vision to spot movement. You will notice moles in every hole faster, and you will have a moment to check whether it is a normal mole, a golden one or the bomb before your finger moves.

A simple rhythm that works

Think of each tap as two steps: see, then tap. If you tap the moment anything moves, you will hit bombs. If you wait too long, moles drop back down. Practise saying "see, tap" in your head for one round. It feels slow at first, but it cuts down on mistakes, and mistakes cost far more points than a slightly slower tap.

Handling the bomb mole

The bomb mole is there to punish reflex tapping. The best way to avoid it is to know exactly what it looks like before you start, and to treat any mole you are not sure about as a bomb. Missing one normal mole costs you very little. Hitting a bomb costs you much more. When in doubt, leave it.

Golden moles

Golden moles are worth more, so it is worth moving for them even if a normal mole is closer. If a golden mole and a normal mole appear at the same time, go for the golden one first.

Phone or computer

On a phone, use the thumb of the hand you write with and hold the phone in your other hand, so the screen stays still. On a computer, a mouse is easier to control than a trackpad. Whatever you use, sit so the whole board is in view without scrolling.

Practice plan

Play one round where your only goal is zero bomb hits. Then play one round where you go for every golden mole. Then put the two together. Most players find their best score comes after they stop trying to tap everything.
