Chess AI - How It Works
This free online chess game runs a minimax-based AI opponent that thinks several moves ahead instead of moving at random, so every game against the computer actually feels like a real match. Choose Easy if you're learning the rules and want a forgiving opponent, Medium for a balanced challenge, or Hard chess AI mode if you want an opponent that punishes weak development and hunts for tactics.
Standard chess rules apply throughout: legal piece movement, castling, en passant, pawn promotion, and check/checkmate detection are all built in, so nothing feels like a simplified version of the game. Stuck on a position? Use the Hint button (3 per game) to see the AI's suggested move and highlighted from/to squares — a built-in coach for players still learning openings and tactics.
Whether you're a beginner working on chess fundamentals or an experienced player looking to play chess online free without downloads, sign-ups, or waiting for a human opponent, this browser-based chess game against computer works instantly on both mobile and desktop.

Chess Tips for Beginners
- In the opening, move your center pawns, bring out knights and bishops, and castle early.
- Do not move the same piece many times in the opening.
- Before every move, ask: what is my opponent threatening?
- Look for checks, captures and threats first. They decide most games.
- In the endgame, bring your King into the fight. It becomes a strong piece.
Accessible Chess
This chess game works with screen readers such as TalkBack on Android. Every square is a labeled button that reads its name and piece, for example "e2, white pawn". When you choose a piece, it reads where it can move, and every move is read out, yours and the AI's, including captures and check. Hints are read out too. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys to move between squares and Enter to choose. It is tested with TalkBack on a phone.
