Can screen reader users play popular browser games?
We opened 50 of the most played browser games on a phone-sized screen and ran the same automated accessibility checks on each one. Most of them are hard or impossible to start with a screen reader.
What we found in 50 games
- 15were blocked: the game board is drawn as a picture, or the first screen is nearly blank, so a screen reader has nothing to read.
- 23loaded, but had buttons, links or images with no name. A screen reader says only “button”.
- 7had no blocker on the first screen.
- 5could not be measured, because the game loads inside a frame or only after a click.
Also, 16 of the 45 games block pinch-to-zoom, and 19 have text with low contrast, which matters to players with low vision.
What this means
A game drawn on a canvas looks fine on screen, but to a screen reader it is one empty picture. Unless the developer adds text, labels or keyboard and touch alternatives, a blind player can open the page and still not know where the game is.
The fixes are usually small: give every button a name, describe the board state in text, don’t block zoom, and keep contrast high. None of this changes how the game looks.

How we tested
Each game’s public page was opened in a headless Chromium browser at a phone screen size (412 by 915 pixels) with a mobile user agent, then left to load for seven seconds. We then ran the open-source axe-core checker (WCAG 2.1 A and AA rules) and measured how much of the screen was taken by an unlabelled canvas, how much readable text the page had, and how many controls had no accessible name.
Seven very popular games, including Wordle and the other New York Times games, agar.io and neal.fun, refused automated browsers, so we replaced them with other well-known games of the same kind.
Automated checks find only part of the accessibility problems, and they only look at the first screen. A game marked “No blocker found” can still be hard to play. A real screen reader test of each game is the next step, and we will update this page with it.
We ran the same test on our own games
Playnook Games’ homepage, Minesweeper, Chess and Sudoku pages showed no blocker in the same test. That does not make them perfect, and we keep fixing what players report. You can see what we support on our accessible games page.
