Connect Four AI - How It Works
Playnook Connect Four pits you against a real minimax-based AI, not a random-move bot, so dropping discs into the grid to line up four in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) actually takes real strategic thinking. Choose Easy, Normal, or Hard AI difficulty, each running the minimax search to a different depth, so the challenge scales from a relaxed casual connect four game to a genuinely tough connect four AI opponent for experienced players.
The classic connect four strategy of controlling the center column and setting up multiple simultaneous winning threats works just as well here as on a physical board โ the Hard AI mode is tuned to spot and block those threats before you can complete them, so beating it takes real planning several moves ahead.
Play this connect four online free, right in your browser, on mobile or desktop, with no downloads or sign-ups. Reset scores anytime and track wins across rounds against each difficulty level.
How to Play Connect Four: Step by Step
- Choose Easy, Normal or Hard AI, or create a room to play a friend.
- Tap a column to drop your disc. It falls to the lowest empty space.
- Take turns with your opponent.
- Connect four of your discs in a row horizontally, vertically or diagonally to win.
- If the board fills with no winner, the round is a draw.
Connect Four Tips for Beginners
- The center column is part of more winning lines than any other, so play there early.
- Try to create two threats at once. Your opponent can only block one.
- Before every move, check if the AI can win on its next turn.
- Avoid filling a space that lets your opponent drop a winning disc right above it.
- Build threats on rows the opponent cannot easily reach yet.
Accessible Connect Four
This version is built to work with screen readers such as TalkBack on Android. The board uses labeled buttons and game updates are read out, and it is tested with TalkBack on a phone.
